Foods and Nutrition

This course is designed to enhance each student's culinary skill level; while also teaching them the importance and nutritional value(s) of food.

    Foods and Nutrition is formatted to allow students to understand and construct food products from each category of the Food Guide Pyramid [MyPlate.gov]. The year begins with a review/overview of various cooking terms, techniques, and tools. Then as the year progresses students will learn about each category of the Food Guide Pyramid [MyPlate], while constructing recipes that incorporate all aspects of the culinary world. Students will learn the very basics such as how to 'hard cook' an egg, to the very detailed and difficult recipes such as making a Chocolate Cake (not from a box) with homemade Peanut Butter whipped icing. During each unit; as student evaluate their food products they also be learning about proper table etiquette and appropriate table conversations.
