*Explicit, direct, comprehensive and structured literacy program that systematically teaches the structure of the English language. Through the program, students learn fluent reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) skills to the level of mastery.
*Students are instructed through a 10-part lesson plan that addresses phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, encoding, high frequency/sight word instruction, fluency, vocabulary, and listening and reading comprehension in a sequential and integrated fashion.
*Instruction requires students to use visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile senses to reinforce skills learned and engage motor memory.
*Organized by "steps" or books that each contain sub-steps. Students must master the skills in each sub-step and book to move to the next step of the program.
