MEET MRS. SCHMEHL

Mrs. Sara Schmehl

Mrs. Schmehl is the Middle School Orchestra teacher for Lamberton MS, and will also be teaching 8th grade Encore Music classes during the 2023-2024 school year for the first time.  She began teaching MS Orchestra in August 2010, working at both LMS and WMS until June 2023.  Prior to this, she spent two years teaching in the elementary string program at Carlisle, 8 years teaching elementary general music and chorus in Carlisle, and 10 years teaching elementary general music and chorus in the Annville-Cleona School District.

She is a 1986 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, where she received a BS in Music Education/Music.  She also holds an MEd degree from Millersville University in Elementary Education, and an MEd degree from Millersville University in Gifted Education with an emphasis in Fine Arts. During the 2019-2020 school year, Mrs. Schmehl underwent the rigorous process to apply to become a National Board Certified Teacher, and was excited to learn that she passed and is able to add NBCT to her qualifications as of December 2020!

In addition to her school teaching, Mrs. Schmehl is musically active in a variety of ways.  She has worked as a professional piano accompanist for the Pennsylvania Suzuki Association's Summer Institute, the Harrisburg Singers, and for various local studio recitals.  She is also active in the music program at Trinity Lutheran Church, Camp Hill.  Additionally, she plays as a saxophonist with the Carlisle Town Band.

Mrs. Schmehl also enjoys composing and arranging - especially string Orchestra music for her students to play.  In 2021 and 2022, two of her compositions were chosen for Outstanding Composition recognition in the "PMEA Member: Compositions for Elementary and Middle School Students" category through the Pennsylvania Music Educators' Association (PMEA) sponsored Composition Program and those compositions were featured in sessions at the PMEA annual Conference in each of those years.

Over the years, her family has enjoyed playing together whenever they can - daughter Meredith (a 2018 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and currently a Neurobiology PhD candidate at Duke University Medical School) is a cellist; and husband Michael is a trumpet player.

Mrs. Schmehl has also served as a private lesson instructor in her home and through the Lebanon Valley College Community Music Institute.  She worked for 6 years as a church Director of Music and organist, taught preschool music classes through the Lower Paxton Township Recreation Department, worked as a Music Director with Annville Community Theater, and plays professionally when the opportunity arises.

Mrs. Schmehl is excited to get to know you and to make music together!
