Girls in STEM

On Tuesday, March 26th, 44 Carlisle High School girls attended the 2nd annual ‘Girls in STEM’ day at Harrisburg University of Science & Technology.  This event was sponsored by Harrisburg University of Science & Technology, as well as the Million Women Mentors- PA.

While at this event, there were a multitude of stations that the girls could attend. Some of the participants learned to construct houses in Minecraft using the Python Coding platform with Raspberry Pi, while other students enjoyed hands-on labs and investigations, which included all of the following; a rabbit dissection specifically looking at the anatomy of the heart, learning about ballistics and fingerprinting testing and seeing the genetics behind fingerprint patterns, observing a variety of different Chemistry experiments and their respective reactions, as well as studying zebra fish under high powered microscopes.  The event concluded with students skyping with female scientists and technology experts to learn about their experiences, courses of study, and various career pathways.  This event was a highly sought after experience so we were so happy to be able to take 44 female students to be immersed in the sciences!

Lastly, Suad Abdalla and Laney Keel both received scholarships from Harrisburg University of Science & Technology to attend one of the Harrisburg University’s summer camps.   The camps are open to both boys and girls and CASD is proud to be offering three camps this summer at Carlisle High School.  There are many other camp offerings that are held at various locations, so please be sure to check these camps out by going to: http://harrisburgu.edu/summer-camps-2019/
