Option I, II, and Honors

The three years of required Social Studies are divided into three programmatic options that are geared toward students’ post-secondary plans.

OPTION I:

These
courses offer standards-aligned content with emphasis on explicit instruction, guided practice, and structured support to promote mastery and application of skills.

OPTION II:

These courses offer standards-aligned content with emphasis on theoretical understanding, critical analysis, and independent work, while cultivating academic independence.

HONORS:

These courses offer standards-aligned content with emphasis on accelerated pacing, exploring topics in greater depth, and requiring significant independence and advanced academic skills. In some cases, Honors courses may represent the third year (or beyond) of a course progression, reflecting the advanced nature of coursework that builds upon multiple years of prerequisite study in the same subject area. When selecting an Honors course, students and parents must complete the "Student & Parent Agreement for Enrollment in Advanced Courses" contract and submit with their course selection sheet at the time of course selection. (See below for download of contract.)

ELECTIVES:
Also, seniors (and select juniors) will have the option of choosing certain electives that allow them to explore other and more concentrated aspects of the social studies. These electives are not organized into Options I or II and may be selected by any student. Advanced Placement study of U.S. and European History, U.S. Government & Politics, African American Studies, and Psychology is also available.
