Rotary International - Speech & Essay

Each year the Rotary International Club sponsors a speech contest centered around their 4-Way Test. The 5-8 minute speech can be on any topic, as long as it weaves the 4-Way Test throughout (see below).  The brochure and application can be found below to download and print.

Applications from students should be submitted directly to Mr. Wagner, and he will forward on to the district office of Rotary.  Applications are due to Mr. Wagner by the close of school on Friday, 18, 2019.

The 4-Way Test:
1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Is it beneficial to all concerned?

The topic should be timely, interesting, and important, as long as it is not profane, obscene, unpatriotic or racist. The topic must be specifically subjected to the Four Way Test.  For example, a few years back one of our CHS students subjected Santa Claus to the test.  She actually won at the national level!  Students are allowed to use note cards at the local competition.  After that, they need to have their speech memorized.

Key Dates:

1.  We will hold a local “competition” in the Fowler Cafe at 3:30pm. Please inform your student participants to be prepared to give their speech on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 in the Fowler Cafe at 3:30pm located at 623 West Penn St., Carlisle, PA 17013.

2.  The Mid-Level competition will be held at Shippensburg University in the Cedda Union Building (CUB) on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 10:30 AM. We are normally done by 1PM at the latest. It is important to get this date on the schedule as this is the last competition for everyone except the winner (and possibly runner up). We ask all participants to be at least 15-20 minutes early. I would hate for anyone to be late and be disqualified.

3.  The final competition for the winners of the Mid-Levels is on April 13, 2019 at the Hershey Hotel, Harrisburg, PA
