Curriculum

SOCIAL STUDIES K-5
The elementary social studies curriculum is based on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Civics and Government, History, Geography, and Economics. Through a study of civic, historic, geographic, and economic issues, students are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make informed decisions that are relevant to their lives today. Students develop the critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills to become responsible and productive citizens in our culturally diverse and interdependent world.

SOCIAL STUDIES 6-8
The middle school social studies curriculum spirals the elementary curriculum and the four essential Academic Standards. The sixth-grade social studies curriculum examines the geography and cultures of the Americas and Europe. In seventh grade, this geographical and cultural study continues with a focus on Africa, Middle East, Asia, and Oceana. The eighth-grade curriculum surveys American history from its founding to the late 1800s.

SOCIAL STUDIES 9-12
Students are required to successfully complete three full-year courses in social studies that include United States History from late 1800s to present, World History, and Civics.  The Advanced Placement option is available in European History, American History, African American History, and Government & Politics.  Students are required to take a fourth year of either math, science, or social studies.  A variety of elective courses are offered to supplement the core social studies program and attain a student's fourth-year requirement to graduate.

Listed below are all the curriculum documents for the social studies program within the Carlisle Area School District, grades K-12. Each document is available for parents and students to view online.  Note that any AP courses are governed by the College Board and such curriculum documents are written by them.
